A Guide to Setting Up Substack

As promised, I recorded the entire set-up of my publication and turned it into a step-by-step guide. It covers setting up an account, creating a publication, adding pages, sections and links, and writing your first post and email newsletter.

The video is pretty long, so there’s also a written guide covering the basics. You can view both here:

Is Substack my favourite?

I launched my new publication on a live lunch and learn on Tuesday. At the end, someone asked if I’d chosen Substack for my membership programme because I thought it was the best of the three platforms. The short answer is no.

There are a couple of reasons I went with Substack, one of them being that I liked the idea of having the chat feature for members.

But the main reason I went with Substack is because I don’t have a business-related publication on there yet.

When I launched the experiment, I had two businesses and a hobby blog, so I had three different audiences and there were three platforms.

But my intention was always to launch a second publication on each. The idea being that I’d have one business-focused publication on each platform and one that was more personal (stuff I just wanted to write about).

I already have business-focused publications on Beehiiv and Ghost, so it made sense to put this new one on Substack.

My plan is to launch another on Beehiiv in the future, and that one will be for non-business content (maybe travel-related, maybe lifestyle, maybe just random stuff I want to write about but never seem to get around to).

However, as Ghost doesn’t have a free version and you can only have one publication on the basic plan, I have decided I’ll stick with just one on there.

And that’s probably for the best as I already have my hands full trying to manage four publications while running two businesses.

Weekly Progress Report

My time this week has mainly been taken up with my new publication. I spent Monday creating the publication and making the Substack video guide. Tuesday, I had my lunch and learn, and Wednesday, I sent a launch email to my TFF subscribers and then made the written guide to go with the video.

I’ve also had to pre-write some of my TFF content for next week as I’m away visiting family.

So it has pretty much been a content creation week, including these two posts I wrote for my new publication:

I’m away next week so I’ll be doing minimal work on the experiment. But once I’m back, I’m going to upgrade to the Scale plan on Beehiiv so I can start testing the features I haven’t had chance to play around with yet. And of course, I’ll be sharing my thoughts on those.

That’s all from me for this week, but I would love to have you in my Write With Lisa membership.
