Week 20: Using Beehiiv's Paid Subs Feature
How does it compare to Substack and Ghost?
The portfolio that's automatically up to date with your work.
Authory saves you hours with a portfolio that's always up to date.

Improving the benefits for my members
Unfortunately, my paid monthly membership isn’t growing as much as I’d like, so I’ve decided to change it up a bit.
I’m now going to run lunch and learn events monthly rather than quarterly. That means members get access to two events per month (a co-working event and a lunch and learn event).
And you can now sign up for a membership via my Beehiiv site
Since I’m already offering paid memberships through both my Substack site (Write with Lisa) and my Ghost site (The Freelance Fairytale), it makes sense to offer paid membership via my Beehiiv site too.
How Beehiiv’s paid subs feature compares to Substack and Ghost
Although all three platforms allow you to set up paid subscriptions, there are some differences and limitations.
Substack is the most limiting, as you can only have one plan with a monthly fee, an annual fee, and an optional founding member fee (which I renamed super member). And it limits the number of benefits you can list.

You can only list three benefits for the paid option
On the subscription sign-up page, it shows the discount for the annual plan to make it more appealing, but you can’t add any extras.

Ghost allows you to set multiple tiers/plans, each with both monthly and annual prices:

Add multiple different plans/tiers

List benefits and add monthly and annual pricing options
You can add multiple benefits for your paid plans, but unfortunately, you can’t add extra benefits just to the annual plan. Again, it will show the discount on the subscription page.

Monthly plans

Annual plans
Beehiiv lets you set up multiple plans/tiers with a choice of monthly, annual, one-off and pay-as-you-feel options.

Create a plan and add monthly, annual, one-off and name your price prices
You can also add additional benefits to the annual plan, which is great for me because I offer extra benefits. Anyone who signs up for the annual plan gets free access to my online Blogging for Business course (worth £99).

Add multiple benefits for the different plan options
Although, I have listed the extra benefits on the sales pages on both my Substack and Ghost sites, I would have liked them to be shown on the subscribe pages. Beehiiv lets you do that, and I think it makes things much clearer.

Upgrade page
It will be interesting to see which of the platforms attracts the most paying members and whether there are differences in how many people pay monthly (£20 per month) versus annually (£200 per year).
And although a membership is the most cost-effective option, I am also offering all co-working and lunch and learn events on a pay-as-you-go basis at £15 per event.
Here’s what I’ve got coming up:
Monthly Co-Working Event Thursday June 12th 13:00-14:30 (UK) Dedicate time to your writing, and get accountability, feedback, and advice from me and other members. |
Lunch & Learn: Repurposing Content Thursday June 26th 13:00-14:00 (UK) I’ll be talking you through how to recycle and repurpose content so you can reach more people and get more mileage from your best stuff. Plus, I'll be explaining how I make a few extra pennies from Medium by reusing content from other platforms. |
Future lunch and learn events:
July: Is content marketing still worth the effort (and how to do it effectively)?
Aug: Ask me anything about blogging (plus a free copy of my book, A-Z of Blogging, for all attendees).
Weekly Progress Report
It’s funny how some social media posts just seem to land better than others.
I shared this post on LinkedIn earlier this week:

Nothing special really. Just a list of my various publications. I wasn’t expecting much to come of it, but it prompted seven people to subscribe to my Get Copy Confident series (and a couple of subscribers to TFF and WWL) so that was nice.
Too many ad opportunities
I’ve had an influx of Beehiiv ad opportunities this week. The problem is you have to run the ads within a specific timeframe or the opportunities expire. This week, I’ve been offered five or six opportunities, but they all expire before the 28th. Since I only send one email a week, I only have two more emails going out before then, so I can’t run them all.
This is a shame because I felt like all of them were relevant, and the publications were interesting.
I don’t want to fill my emails full of ads (and from what I can gather, you are limited to two per email anyway), so I’ve had to be selective.
I’m hoping some of them will come back around again because I would like to share them (and hopefully make a few pennies).
Anyway, I have selected two for this week and two for next (one for the top of the email and one for the bottom). I have vetted the publications because I’m not just going to stick any old ads in my emails. And I will, of course, be sharing the earnings with you at the end of each month.
That’s it from me for this week. It’s been pretty productive, and I’m excited to see which of the three platforms attracts the most paid subscribers over the next few months.
I’m also curious to see whether running ads in these emails is worthwhile or not (but more on that in my monthly results update).
As always, thanks for reading and do let me know if you have any questions, comments or feedback.
